Každý z nás si pod pojmom kontajnerový dom predstavuje niečo iné. Niekoho v prvom momente možno napadne, že ide naozaj o dom či budovu z odpadkových kontajnerov, iného zas, že ide iba o názov a s kontajnerom to nemá nič spoločné atď. O tých predstavách a myšlienkach by sa však dalo rozprávať hodiny.

Prečo sa kontajnerové domy nazývajú kontajnerové?
Jednoduchou odpoveďou na otázku, prečo sa kontajnerové domy nazývajú kontajnerové, je ich prevedenie akým sa vyrábajú a realizujú. Kontajnerové domy a stavby pozostávajú zo samostatne stojacich kontajnerov, ktoré sa k sebe ukladajú ako samostatné moduly a následne sa spájajú do jedného celku tvoriaceho celú budovu. Preto bývajú často označované aj ako modulové domy alebo modulárne domy.
Základným konštrukčným prvkom kontajneru alebo modulu je oceľová konštrukcia, tzv. oceľový skelet. Oceľový skelet si môžete predstaviť ako kocku alebo kváder (viď. obrázok nižšie), ktorý je zhotovený z oceľových profilov typu U, I a L. V základnom prevedení je konštrukcia buď ošetrená iba farbou alebo kvalitnejšie bývajú najčastejšie pozinkované. Samozrejme od toho sa odvíja aj cena kontajnerového domu a aj jeho životnosť.

Po vyhotovení oceľovej konštrukcie sa následne pripravujú jednotlivé moduly podľa projektovej dokumentácie k vnútornému a vonkajšiemu oplášteniu. Vzhľadom na to, že je každý modul súčasťou inej časti kontajnerového domu či kontajnerovej stavby, tak sa musí samozrejme pripraviť do podoby, kedy sa bude na pozemku už len spájať do jedného celku. Preto sa dôsledne vyhotovujú moduly už aj s rozvodmi elektriny, plynu, vody, prípadne inými potrebnými komponentmi priamo vo fabrike.
Každý dom, rovnako aj modulárny dom, je jedinečný a každý zákazník má iné potreby, predstavy a želania, ako by mal vyzerať ten jeho finálny a vysnívaný. Jednotlivé moduly so všetkými potrebnými komponentmi sa sfinalizujú a pripravia na prepravenie k zákazníkovi.
Na pozemku s vopred predpripraveným základom sa ukladajú žeriavom jednotlivé moduly do jedného celku. Každý modul sa uchýtáva špeciálnymi úchytmi, aby vznikla jedna súvislá stavba. Jednotlivé moduly sa naukladajú vedľa seba, prípadne na seba, ak ide o viacpodlažnú budovu (viď. obrázok nižšie).

V závislosti na vonkajšom opláštení domu, sa buď stavba ukončuje iba položením modulov a ich vzájomným spojením alebo sa následne realizuje ešte vonkajšie opláštenie.
Ak sa jedná o dom alebo budovu napríklad s klasickou fasádou, tá sa nedá vopred vo fabrike pripraviť jednak z dôvodu zachovania jednotnej línie celého domu a aj z dôvodu prepravy a rozmerov samotného domu.
